Conviction Records

Jill founded Scotland’s first record label for ex-offenders, Conviction Records, at the end of 2020. She came up with the idea as a result of working in HMP Barlinnie in Glasgow, Scotland’s largest prison, and one of the most notorious in the UK.

Jill has been volunteering there as a musician for around ten years on an ad hoc basis and has organised a number of gigs involving prisoners and her own band. Many people who end up in prison come from violent and abusive background and suffer from other mental health conditions like PTSD.

The aim of Conviction Records is to help restore dignity and self-esteem and offer hope and an alternative to criminality. Recently the organisation was given funding from Creative Scotland to run two workshops in HMP Barlinnie, the first in hop hop and the second in songwriting.

Through music individuals are given the opportunity to express themselves, often finding their voice for the first time The record label was established as a social enterprise and thus needs to generate some of its own funding. Should you engage the services of Jill Brown Media you can choose for a small percentage of the fee to go to the Conviction Records.Your contribution will go towards giving a voice to some of the most vulnerable people in our society.

In January 2024 the BBC featured the work of the label extensively across the UK. Click here to read a piece on the BBC news website.
